Visiting the Great Northwest, or Roadtrip Pt. 2

Howard W. Hewitt - For several years Wabash Magazine Editor Steve Charles lamented he couldn't tell some of the stories of our alums in California and other far-away places.

One thing led to another ending up with me making a two-week trip to California for a special issue of Wabash Magazine called "Roadtrip California." The main purpose was to visit alums in the area and share their stories. We also tried to include a feel for the places they live and work. We got a lot of positive feedback.

So, we're doing it again. I'm off to the Great Northwest Tuesday, July 1 to visit alums in the Portland, Seattle, and even Vancouver B.C. areas.

I will write stories for our 39 UNDER 39 web feature and for a special issue of Wabash Magazine. That issue will likely be our Spring 2009 issue.

Most of my schedule is set but I'll be finalizing a few details and new twists even after departure. I also hope to catch up with Ben Lower '98 of Microsoft while in Seattle and Nathan Clark '03, an independent artist, while in Portland. Greg Fulmer '05 has promised a tour of Seattle's nightlife.

Here is just an idea or who I'll be seeing:

In Portland:

Dan Schenk '97, marketing manager for Nike Golf.
Bob Chamness '75, vice president and general counsel for Digimarc.
Michael Wells '93, a program analyst for Intel.

In Seattle:

Andrew Naugle '98, a Principal, Healthcare Management Consultant for Milliman.
John Kasey '08, who just joined Naugle at Milliman
Dr. Bob Witherspoon '65, Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center.
Dr. David Avery '68, Professor of Pyschiatry and Behavior Sciences, U. of Washington.
Lee Grogg '68, Executive Director of the Ryther Child Center

In Vanouver B.C.:

Mike Gallagher '68, President and CEO of Westport Innovations

And I'll be updating the blog daily while on the road. So check back for updates on our visit to these interesting Wabash alums!
