Beth -

Your blog brought back fond memories of a more prosperous day for this C'ville landmark. As a kid , that was where I went to the dentist (Bushong), family doctor (Kirtley and Millis), various specialists, and to see my Dad (Wernle & Ristine). The elevator was operated by a kind gentleman who tolerated kids, and the snack counter in the lobby had gum and candy bars for 5 cents. The building did not have central air. In high school, my first part-time job was there in the Dental Arts lab operated by Don Yano.

Also enjoyed photos of Thad on the Glee Club trip and of Yandes, which still had a dirt floor in the basement when I first saw it. Growing up on the edge of the campus had its benefits. I drove my go-kart around the cinder track that circled the football field - it was barely fast enough to outrun the angry custodians!

Best,

Polly and I remember that trip well. It was the first time we had ever been to Florida, and one of the alumni meetings and concerts was held at the old Langford Hotel in Winter Park (right across the street from Rollins College). We came to Florida for good in 1978, when I was appointed president of Rollins, and we have lived here for thirty-five years. Over the years, we have enjoyed hosting the glee club and the swimming team on a number of occasions.

Beth,

While I enjoy reading all of your posts, this very well may be my favorite yet! Cole's cartoons show a remarkable point in our College's history, the "golden years" described in 'These Fleeting Years'.

The amount of detail in each cartoon shows student life that is very different from today, yet still includes traditional landmarks such as Center Hall, the clock tower, and the Chapel.

I may have to stop by the Archives soon to see this cartoons up close!

Thanks for sharing this article. "Tiny" was my Great, Great Uncle. His brother, Harry, was my Great Grandfather. Tiny is being inducted to the Wabash High School Hall of Fame in Wabash, Indiana this year. His brother, Homer, was inducted last year.

Fun read. Sent this to my grandson who may consider Wabash. We can no longer match Purdue's purchasing power for athletes but we can and do for scholars.

Thanks Mrs. Swift. That is my wife's favorite Christmas movie. So great to see a Wally in it! I will certainly remember this tidbit each year we watch it.
