Jim Cooper ’81 receives HBA President’s Award

Jim Cooper ’81 is a partner at Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP law in Houston. Jim was honored by the Houston Bar Association with the prestigious President’s Award during the HBA’s Annual Dinner Meeting on May 16, based on his outstanding contribution to the local bar while serving as chair of the HBA Historical Committee. This is the second time Jim has earned the President’s Award, having garnered the same honor in 2010 based on his service as co-chair of the HBA’s Professionalism Committee.

Jim earned his J.D. at Tulane University Law School in 1984. Congratulations, Jim!

Meet teacher Josh Miracle ‘11

Josh Miracle ’11 has taught Social Studies at Westfield High School since graduating from Wabash in 2011. Click here to see a short Q&A from the WHS web site.

Q. What’s something your students might not know about you?
A. I played football for Westfield High School’s current head coach, Jake Gilbert, while he was coaching at Wabash College!

Josh took advantage of Wabash’s 9^th semester option, completing his semester of student teaching after graduating in May 2011. Josh was a recipient of the “Outstanding Future Educator Award,” presented at the Indiana Association of Colleges for Teacher Education annual dinner.

Josh majored in History, but temporarily taught Economics and Computer Applications for his first assignment. He commented on his Wabash preparation for teaching: “Although I was never trained in business or entrepreneurship, thanks to Wabash, I was more than adequately prepared. My liberal arts education certainly allowed me to think on my feet, continue to learn, and tie my own content knowledge to lessons in both business and entrepreneurship.”

Dr. Ed Fox ’79 named to Southern Illinois Bancorp advisory board

Dr. Ed Fox ’79 has been appointed to the Advisory Board of Directors for the Southern Illinois Bancorp, Inc., financial holding company for First Bank.

Ed is an Oncologist/Hematologist and Founder of Oncology Hematology Associates in Evansville, Ind. He earned his A.B. from Wabash College and M.D. from Case Western Reserve University.

Hans Heintzelman ’94 featured during National Preservation Month

Hans Heintzelman ’94, a woodworker who restores old buildings in Muncie, IN, is featured in a documentary film about preservation of Muncie’s Old West End. The film was produced by an immersive learning class from Ball State University. It is one of two documentaries which will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 17 at Muncie Civic Theatre.

“Heintzelman made news last year — when he won the Althea Stoeckel Historic Preservation Award for his restoration of a row of downtown commercial buildings — and again this year — when he was awarded a $44,218 downtown facade restoration grant.

“He and King are both college-educated, younger men who convey the message that the downtown and its adjacent residential neighborhoods, including Old West End, depend on each other for success.

“An art and religion graduate of Wabash College, Heintzelman works downtown in a group of High Street buildings he is restoring. He earns screen time in the documentary because he has done a lot of work restoring housing in the Old West End.”

Dr. John Walker ’91 – plays baseball in Cuba and gives away a lot more

Dr. John Walker ’91 is a Crawfordsville dentist. He is also a baseball fan and pitched for Wabash baseball. He is also a traveler. In April he combined his love of baseball with a trip to Cuba through the Cuban Sports Ministry.

They played games with Cuban all-star teams in villages and in Havana. They shared their equipment with the opposing teams, and gave away baseballs, bats, and gloves. They also gave away soap and toothpaste, which is a limited luxury for the citizens of Cuba. Click here to read the complete story in the Journal Review.

Neil Burk ’12 named Managing Editor of The Paper

Neil Burk ‘12 is leaving his position as sports editor of The Paper of Montgomery County, but not moving far. He has been named Managing Editor of The Paper, so he will be turning his attention to the community as a whole and its news. Neil was a Rhetoric major at Wabash, and building on his love of sports, he was sometimes a freelance writer for The Paper before joining its sports department last fall. Neil’s ultimate goal in life, per a recent interview with him in The Paper, is to be ESPN baseball broadcaster by the time he is 50 years old. Congratulations, Neil, and best of luck in your next step towards your goal!

Mark Miles ’76 – “What I Know”

Mark Miles ’76 is the May interviewee for the “What I Know” column in the Indianapolis Monthly magazine. Click here to read the questions and his answers.

Last November, Mark was named chief executive officer of Hulman & Company, which includes the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IndyCar Series in the businesses it owns. He served as chairman of the 2012 Super Bowl Host Committee and is former CEO of the ATP Tour, which helps oversee men’s professional tennis.

Alan McLaughlin ’79 and Mark Stuaan ’78 honored for Pro Bono Work

Two Wabash alumni received the Pro Bono & Public Service Award at the 62^nd Annual Meeting of the Seventh Circuit Bar Association Dinner on May 6 in Indianapolis.

Alan L. McLaughlin ’79 is Office Managing Shareholder at the Littler Mendelson law office in Indianapolis, focusing on employment-related disputes at the administrative, state and federal levels. Alan earned his J.D. at Vanderbilt University Law School in 1982.

Mark D. Stuaan ’78 is a partner at the Indianapolis office of Barns & Thornburg LLP. His practice is in litigation and white collar criminal defense in state and federal district courts. Mark earned his J.D. from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 1981.

The Honorable Elena Kagan, Associate Justice United States Supreme Court, offered remarks and introduction of the annual dinner speaker. The Honorable John G. Roberts, Jr., Chief Justice of the United States was the dinner speaker. Both were present on the dais as the awards were presented.

Something this morning told me I should stop by “College Corner.” Sure enough, the time had come to replace the Tulips. It’s almost as if they don’t want to get to Commencement…so they can stay another year. (I know, the Grunge is NOT sleeping well at all!)
